Florida parents get direct complaint portal under new AG initiative supporting family rights

Tallahassee, Florida – Attorney General James Uthmeier unveiled a ground-breaking office entirely committed to protecting parents’ rights across Florida. Called the Office of Parental Rights (OPR), this project is the first time a state attorney general’s office has created a division specifically dedicated to guaranteeing that legal guardians, fathers, and mothers have complete control over their children’s development free from excessive interference.

In announcing the new bureau, Uthmeier emphasized that parental insight and decision-making should be respected above all.

“Governments should understand that—when it comes to raising a child—they don’t know best. The parents do, and they deserve an Attorney General’s office working on their behalf,” said Attorney General James Uthmeier in a release.

“This first-in-the-nation office is a mechanism for parents and families to seek justice where local governments and school systems seek to ‘treat,’ indoctrinate, or collect data from students without parental involvement. This new initiative is another way we are making Florida the best place to raise a family.”

The OPR’s foundation is Florida law’s long-standing protections, where parental rights are preserved to a child’s legal guardians free from interference by state or municipal authorities. Uthmeier’s office intends to actively intervene in situations where those rights are questioned—whether by unjustified data collecting, unauthorized counseling sessions or conflicts over educational resources.

Among the concerns the OPR will handle are attempts by schools or other organizations to gather biometric or personal data without clear parental permission, denials of access to academic records, and the delivery of health treatments or mental health counseling without informing guardians. The office will also examine any pressure to keep information secret, questions about a family’s educational decisions, and cases where offensive books or library options were added without parental involvement.

Cases will be sent to the Office of Statewide Prosecution if an issue involves obvious criminal behavior, so guaranteeing that any possible infractions be addressed with the whole weight of legal authority. The OPR intends to be both investigator and champion for non-criminal complaints, hence helping parents overcome any legal or administrative challenges they could face.

This launch builds on recent Florida laws, especially the Parents’ Bill of Rights and the Parental Rights in Education Act, which have tried to clarify and strengthen the role of parents in choices affecting their children’s welfare. Uthmeier wants to simplify family access to justice by centralizing resources and expertise inside the attorney general’s office, so sparing parents from negotiating a labyrinth of administrative red tape.

The attorney general’s office will launch an online portal in the next few days allowing parents to file complaints straight to the OPR. The department’s website will soon publish thorough instructions on portal use as well as details on submission deadlines and anticipated response times.

Florida is putting itself at the vanguard of a national campaign to reassert parental primacy in child-rearing choices with this first-in-the-nation office—and to ensure that families have a clear, easily available route to protect their rights.
