Florida AG files election fraud charges against felon who voted while on probation
Florida – In a case highlighting the strict application of election laws, Florida’s Attorney General James Uthmeier announced voting fraud charges against Jeffrey Luke Crane. A former felon on probation, Crane is charged with illegally participating in the 2022 General Election.
The allegations, voting by an unqualified elector and false affirmation, result from Crane’s activities during the 2022 general election where he cast a ballot despite his ineligibility due to his felony status. “Ensuring the integrity of our elections is important to safeguarding our republican form of government,” said Attorney General James Uthmeier in a release. “This defendant knowingly participated in the 2022 election as a felon on probation, and our Statewide Prosecutors will hold him accountable for this criminal action.”
Crane’s criminal record includes serious offenses such as aggravated fleeing with injury or damage, resisting an officer with violence, failing to stop or remain at a crash scene involving injury, and driving while under the influence. His probation terms explicitly prohibited him from voting until he had completely served his time and fulfilled probation obligations.
Investigations turned up Crane’s signature on a Florida Department of Corrections probation acknowledgment form explicitly specifying his voting limitations. Crane voted despite getting a written notice from the Supervisor of Elections stating his voting ineligibility; he later admitted this during a law enforcement investigation.
The case, which might establish precedents for how similar future events are handled by the legal system, has been assigned to Assistant Statewide Prosecutor Sophia Birriel-Sanchez.
