Under Gov. DeSantis’ direction, state troopers, drones, and K9 units mobilized to prevent spring break chaos in Florida

Tallahassee, Florida – Governor Ron DeSantis has announced a major increase in law enforcement resources to guarantee a safe and orderly period as Florida gets ready for the spring break influx of tourists. Aiming to prevent the chaos seen in other prominent spring break locations throughout the nation, the state is once again set to preserve public safety and order on building on the proactive efforts from last year.

“We do not tolerate lawlessness. Last year, we set out to have a safe and orderly spring break—and thanks to the efforts of law enforcement and local leaders, we delivered. This year, we’re doing it again,” said Governor Ron DeSantis earlier this week.

“I have directed our state law enforcement agencies to provide additional personnel and assets to ensure that our local partners have the resources they need to keep the peace over spring break. We welcome visitors who want to enjoy all our state has to offer. But we will not allow mayhem to ensue, or the inmates to run the asylum,” DeSantis added.

The Florida Highway Patrol has started sending extra troopers and equipment under governor’s direction to help local agencies that have asked for assistance. From February 27 through April, more than 100 troopers will be mobilized statewide; agencies in highly sought-after locations like Miami Beach and Panama City Beach will get most of the support.

Advanced equipment include drones, aircraft, armored vehicles (bearcats), and K9 units as part of the deployment, therefore improving the capacity of local police forces.

Executive Director of the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles Dave Kerner stated his department is ready to assist the project.

“At the direction of Governor DeSantis, the Florida Highway Patrol will once again use our full spectrum of resources and personnel to assist our local communities to ensure a peaceful and enjoyable spring break,” said Kerner. “From Miami Beach to Panama City Beach, State Troopers will be amplifying local law enforcement officers to keep your spring break experience safe and enjoyable, and we’re honored to assist.”

The outcome of the spring break enforcement from the past year highlight the success of such policies. State-wide initiatives produced 11 DUI arrests, 51 misdemeanor arrests, and 36 felony arrests.

As a concentration region for spring break events, Miami Beach alone saw police detained 16 felons and 17 others on minor counts, recovered 6 weapons, and issued over 1,200 moving citations. With 259 tickets around the state, law enforcement also included commercial vehicle oversight.

This methodical approach to handling spring break attendees provides a template for balancing community safety with tourism. The increased law enforcement presence aims to ensure that the celebrations do not turn into chaos as thousands of guests descend upon Florida’s beautiful beaches and energetic nightlife, therefore preserving the spring break experience safe and pleasant for all engaged.
