Fort Walton Beach residents get opportunity to influence future building and land use regulations

Fort Walton Beach, Florida – Rules governing how land can be developed, improved and used in Fort Walton Beach are getting another look. This time, city officials want the people who work with those rules, along with everyday residents, to help decide what needs to change.

The goal is straightforward: make the city’s Land Development Code easier to understand, more efficient and less complicated to navigate. A public workshop scheduled for later this month will give the community an opportunity to weigh in.

The City of Fort Walton Beach has announced that its Growth Management Department will hold a Land Development Code workshop on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, beginning at 5:30 p.m.

The meeting will take place in the Growth Management Office Training Room at 105 Miracle Strip Parkway SW in Fort Walton Beach.

The workshop is part of the city’s continuing effort to review and streamline its Land Development Code, commonly known as the LDC. City staff will explain recent updates to the code and introduce possible changes being considered for the future.

However, the meeting is not intended to be simply a presentation by city officials. Public participation will be a central part of the discussion.

Builders, developers, contractors and engineers are among those encouraged to attend. Residents who have suggestions or concerns about the existing regulations are also invited to participate.

City officials are particularly interested in hearing how the code could become clearer and easier to use. Feedback collected during the workshop could help guide future revisions as the city continues its review process.

For professionals who regularly deal with development regulations, the meeting offers an opportunity to identify provisions that may be confusing or unnecessarily difficult to navigate. Residents, meanwhile, can share their own perspectives on how the city’s development rules should be improved.

There is no registration requirement.

With future changes still under discussion, the city is asking people with practical experience, questions or suggestions to attend and share their views. The feedback will give officials additional perspectives as they consider how to make the Land Development Code more accessible and efficient in the years ahead.
