Destin issues storm safety advisory as Tropical Storm Isaias threatens homes and businesses
Destin, Florida – A trash can left at the curb or a patio umbrella forgotten outside might seem harmless on an ordinary Friday. But with Tropical Storm Isaias approaching, the City of Destin is warning that even small items could become dangerous when strong winds arrive.
City officials are urging homeowners and businesses to prepare before weather conditions begin to worsen on Friday. The forecast could still change, but the city says residents should not wait until the storm arrives to take basic precautions.
Destin officials are continuing to monitor Isaias and have released a series of recommendations aimed at reducing property damage, preventing drainage problems and helping residents prepare for possible power outages and heavy rainfall.
One immediate concern involves Friday’s regular garbage collection. Residents are being instructed to bring their trash cans back inside or secure them as soon as collection crews empty them.
Empty garbage cans can become airborne in high winds, creating hazards for nearby homes, vehicles and people.

The city is also asking residents to remove or secure loose outdoor objects, including patio furniture, umbrellas, grills and decorations.
Keeping drainage systems clear is another important part of the preparation effort. Residents should check storm drains, swales and other drainage areas around their properties and avoid placing branches, leaves, grass clippings or other debris in streets or drainage systems.
Households are encouraged to fill vehicle gas tanks, charge phones and portable batteries, and gather essential supplies such as drinking water, food, medications, flashlights and pet necessities.
People living in flood-prone neighborhoods should consider moving vehicles and other valuable property to higher ground before conditions deteriorate.
The city also recommends photographing homes, vehicles and other property before the storm and checking on neighbors or relatives who might need assistance.
Local businesses have been given additional instructions. Owners should secure signs, dumpsters, outdoor furniture and construction materials while protecting important documents, equipment and computer files.
Businesses should also fuel vehicles and emergency equipment, test backup generators, and establish clear communication plans for potential closures or schedule changes.
Managers are encouraged to assign responsibility for securing their facilities and complete those preparations early.
Beyond protecting property, Destin officials are emphasizing personal safety. Drivers should never attempt to cross flooded roads, and residents should avoid the Gulf and waterways as storm conditions worsen.
Residents are encouraged to follow updates from the City of Destin, Okaloosa County Emergency Management and the National Weather Service.
City officials say they will continue tracking Tropical Storm Isaias and release additional information as conditions develop.
