Destin-area Brooks Bridge project enters next phase after major concrete milestone
Destin, Florida – A major piece of the $171 million Brooks Bridge replacement project is now in place, bringing the long-running construction effort closer to the point when drivers can begin using the first of two new bridge structures.
Crews have completed concrete placement for the deck of the future westbound Brooks Bridge, a milestone that shifts attention from the main span to the final construction work needed before the new bridge can open to traffic.

Much of the concrete work was carried out at night. Cooler nighttime temperatures help limit rapid moisture evaporation from freshly placed concrete, allowing it to cure properly and meet the project’s construction specifications.
With the main span concrete placement finished, crews can now move into another important phase of the project. Upcoming work includes construction of the remaining bridge components and completion of roadway connections that will eventually tie the new structure into the surrounding transportation network.

Crews will also continue work on barrier walls, drainage systems, lighting and other supporting features required before vehicles can begin traveling across the new westbound bridge.
The new structure represents only half of the larger replacement plan. Once the entire project is finished, two parallel bridges will take the place of the existing Brooks Bridge.

Together, the new bridges are planned to provide six travel lanes, along with wider shoulders. The project also includes improved accommodations for people traveling across the bridge on foot or by bicycle.
Completion of the westbound bridge deck is therefore an important visible step, but significant construction remains before the full replacement is finished. The next stage will concentrate on connecting the new structure with the roadway and installing the infrastructure needed for normal traffic operations.

The Brooks Bridge replacement project remains scheduled for completion in early 2029. When finished, the two new structures will replace the existing bridge while expanding capacity and providing additional space for motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists traveling across the corridor.
