Local leaders gather in Okaloosa County to push housing discussion toward concrete solutions
Okaloosa County, Florida – The housing conversation in Okaloosa County moved beyond broad concerns Wednesday and into a room filled with local leaders working on what comes next.
Community organizations, business leaders and other stakeholders gathered Sept. 23 at Okaloosa Gas’ The District for Housing Summit 3.0, where affordable workforce housing took center stage. The goal was not simply to discuss the issue, but to develop action items aimed at improving housing availability across the county.
The summit continues a series of gatherings that began in 2024 through the Florida Department of Health’s Okaloosa County Health Improvement Partnership, or OCHIP. The partnership brings organizations and individuals together to address community health priorities through local workgroups and coordinated efforts.

Housing has become an ongoing area of work for Okaloosa County as officials and community stakeholders look for ways to improve both the availability and accessibility of workforce housing for a growing population. The county says its Housing Department is implementing strategies identified in its Attainable Workforce Housing Strategic Plan while working with developers and real estate groups.

Wednesday’s summit also brought another major local issue into the housing discussion. A panel examined proposed Florida Amendment 3 and what its passage could mean for Okaloosa County.
The proposed constitutional amendment is scheduled for the November 2026 ballot and would require approval from at least 60% of voters. Among its provisions, it would expand homestead exemptions for qualifying primary residences. Okaloosa County estimates the resulting reduction in countywide property-tax collections at about $26.7 million in the first year and $43.1 million in the second year under current taxable values and fiscal 2026 millage rates.
