Destin urges residents and visitors to give nesting sea and shorebirds room to survive this summer

Destin, Florida – The City of Destin is reminding residents and visitors that summer beach days come with a shared responsibility: protecting Florida’s nesting sea and shorebirds while enjoying the sand and shoreline.

As crowds return to Destin’s beaches, sea and shorebirds are already beginning to raise their families in the same coastal spaces where people walk, swim and relax. The city’s message is simple but important: Share the shore. Nesting season is a sensitive time, and birds need quiet space to care for eggs and chicks without being disturbed.

Many nesting areas may be marked with signs or barriers. The city is asking beachgoers to stay out of posted nesting zones and closed Critical Wildlife Areas. Even a short walk through one of these areas can scare adult birds away from their nests, leaving eggs or young birds exposed to heat, predators and other dangers.

Residents are also urged to avoid walking through flocks of resting birds along the shoreline. While it may look harmless, forcing birds to fly away uses energy they need for nesting, feeding and protecting their young. Giving them space is one of the easiest ways people can help wildlife survive the busy summer season.

Another major reminder is to keep food and trash off the beach. Leftover snacks, wrappers or other waste can attract gulls, crows, raccoons and other scavengers. Those animals may also eat shorebird eggs and chicks. Cleaning up after a beach visit helps keep the shoreline safer for both people and wildlife.

The city is also reminding anyone bringing a dog to check local rules and ordinances for the specific beach they plan to visit. Rules can vary, and following them helps prevent pets from disturbing nesting birds or other beachgoers.

Destin’s beaches are a treasured part of summer, but they are also living habitats. For the birds raising their young there, the beach is not just a place to visit. It is home.

With a few simple choices, residents and visitors can make a real difference. Stay out of marked nesting areas. Walk around resting birds. Pack out food and trash. Follow pet rules. This summer, sharing the shore means helping Destin’s smallest coastal families have the space they need to grow.
