Fort Walton Beach turns back-to-school preparation into a free family event on August 1

Fort Walton Beach, Florida – With the first school bell only weeks away, families in Fort Walton Beach have a chance to prepare for the new academic year without turning the process into another stressful summer errand.

On Saturday, August 1, the Fort Walton Beach Recreation Center will become a one-stop back-to-school hub, bringing supplies, food, music, health services and family resources together under one roof.

The “Back 2 School” community event will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the recreation center, located at 132 Jet Drive NW in Fort Walton Beach. Nearly 30 local businesses and organizations are joining the effort, creating an event aimed at students from kindergarten through 12th grade. Parents are strongly encouraged to attend.

Backpacks and essential school supplies will be distributed while quantities last, but organizers say the event is designed to offer much more than free materials. Families will be able to meet organizations that provide support throughout the year, including tutoring programs, educational services and scholarship information.

Students and parents can also learn about available health screenings, mental health resources and mentorship opportunities. The mentorship information will be especially focused on middle and high school students who may benefit from additional guidance as they move through important academic years.

Parents will have access to practical information as well. Participating organizations will share housing resources, including guidance for first-time homebuyers, giving families a chance to explore services that extend beyond the classroom.

The afternoon will also have a festival feel. Pizza, snacks, cotton candy and popcorn will be available, while a live DJ provides music throughout the event.

OneBlood’s Big Red Bus will arrive earlier and remain on site from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. to accept blood donations. Donors will receive a $25 eGift Card, a Big Red Bus T-shirt and a wellness checkup that includes blood pressure, pulse, temperature, iron count and cholesterol screening.

Appointments are encouraged and can be scheduled through OneBlood’s donation page using sponsor code 79668.

Community members can also support the event before August 1. Organizers are still accepting donations of new backpacks and school supplies. Items may be dropped off with Pat Sherman at the Fort Walton Beach Recreation Center.

For local families, the event offers a timely way to check several back-to-school needs off the list while also discovering programs that could remain useful long after the first day of class. It also gives students a positive, welcoming start to the year and parents a direct connection to local help in one convenient place.
