Online participation now open for Okaloosa-Walton residents to weigh in on vital transportation projects and funding decisions

Fort Walton Beach, Florida – Residents of Okaloosa County have an exclusive opportunity to shape upcoming transportation initiatives in the area. The Emerald Coast Regional Council is inviting public participation to help set the 2025 Project Priorities for the Okaloosa-Walton Transportation Planning Organization (TPO). This program emphasizes how the community shapes its own transportation system to better fit its demands.

By holding a Virtual Open House, the council has taken a creative approach letting people interact with the planning process from the comfort of their own homes. This digital format is meant to enable a more inclusive involvement process since anyone may learn about the suggested initiatives and offer comments at their convenience. The public comment period for this initiative began on Monday, March 10, 2025, and will remain open until Friday, April 25, 2025.

The final project list, which will be sent to the Florida Department of Transportation for approval, will be significantly influenced by comments gathered during this time. The TPO Board Meeting set for Thursday, May 15, 2025 will be expected to endorse and discuss the completed priorities.

Apart from the online platform, the TPO will run a Public Workshop at the Fort Walton Beach Public Library. Set for 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 17, 2025, this event provides extra involvement for people who like in-person interactions. Workshop participants will get the opportunity to see mapped projects, interact directly with transportation planners, ask questions, and share their views on project prioritization.

Focusing on enhancing roads, intersections, public transit, and reducing traffic congestion, the Okaloosa-Walton TPO changes its list of transportation priority projects annually. These priorities direct the distribution of state and federal money via the Five-Year Work Program of the Florida Department of Transportation.
