Okaloosa County’s Kindergarten Kickstart gives 330 young learners a head start before school begins

Okaloosa County, Florida – The first step into kindergarten just made a little easier for a lot of families in Okaloosa County. The Okaloosa County School District just finished its annual Kindergarten Kickstart program, which helps new children be ready for school by giving them a good start.
The program ran from July 21 to July 24 and welcomed 330 kids who were going to kindergarten in 11 Title I schools. The schools that took part, from Edwins and Elliott Point to Northwood and Wright Elementary, opened their doors early to offer these kids a head start. The goal was to make a safe, low-stress environment for kids to get to know their new surroundings, learn the basics of school life, and meet the individuals who would be important to them during their first year of school.
The program was more than just introductions in the classroom. To assist each youngster grow outside of school, they all got a school readiness kit with learning tools including the Summer Express workbook, Scholastic books, and school supplies. The district also gave families free meals and transportation all week long to make sure that no one had trouble participating.

Kindergarten Kickstart is a sign of an increasing commitment to early childhood education. It is funded by the Title I District Initiative. With the help of administrators, teachers, and the Title I team, what began as a small pilot program has expanded into a district-wide endeavor.
“This program has grown from a pilot at one school into a robust district-wide effort,” said Superintendent Marcus Chambers. “Kindergarten Kickstart provides our youngest learners with a vital head start, enabling them to meet their teachers, understand daily routines, and become comfortable in their new learning environment.”
The initiative not only makes children feel better, but it also deepens the connection between schools and families. Teachers learn a lot about their new students right away, and parents leave with a better idea of what to expect. For many, that peace of mind is priceless.
Kindergarten Kickstart has once again shown that it is more than just a teaser as the new school year draws near. It’s a launchpad that sets the stage for a confident and connected start to school life in Okaloosa County.
