City of Destin invites residents to spotlight local heroes ahead of America’s 250th anniversary
Destin, Florida – In a city shaped by service both seen and unseen, Destin is launching a new effort to honor the people who quietly hold the community together.
As part of the lead-up to America’s 250th anniversary, the City of Destin is inviting residents to help identify the local people whose everyday actions leave a lasting mark. The initiative, known as the Hometown Hero Challenge, will recognize 250 individuals with a custom Challenge Coin as a symbol of gratitude and respect.

City officials are asking the public to nominate people who consistently step forward for others. The city says acts of service come in many forms, and the definition of a hero is intentionally broad.
A nominee might be a teacher guiding students, a veteran continuing to serve beyond uniform, a volunteer giving time without fanfare, or a neighbor who always shows up when help is needed. The point is not title or status, but impact.
To submit a nomination, residents should email [email protected] with the nominee’s name, email address, and phone number. The nomination must also include, in fewer than 500 words, an explanation of why that person deserves to be considered a Hometown Hero and how the individual has made a difference in Destin.
As the city put it, “Heroes come in all shapes and sizes – what matters is that they show up when it counts. This person could be a teacher, a veteran, a volunteer or a neighbor. Use your imagination!”
Rather than relying on a single deadline and one-time review, nominations will be accepted and considered on a rolling basis through September 15, 2026. Those selected will be contacted directly, and arrangements will be made for them to receive the commemorative coin and have a photograph taken.
For people unfamiliar with the tradition, a Challenge Coin is a small, specially designed coin used to recognize service, achievement, or connection to a group. Long associated with the military and first responders, it has also become a meaningful way for local governments and civic groups to show appreciation. Small in size but rich in symbolism, the coin stands as a personal reminder that service matters.
With this challenge, Destin is doing more than handing out keepsakes. It is creating a public thank-you to the people whose efforts often happen without applause, but whose presence helps define the strength and spirit of the community.
