Fort Walton Beach announces widespread city closures as Tropical Storm Isaias approaches Florida coast

Fort Walton Beach, Florida – Fort Walton Beach residents who need to visit City Hall, use public recreation facilities or stop by the library have only a limited window to do so before Tropical Storm Isaias arrives. The city is shutting down most government buildings and public facilities as preparations for the storm move forward.

And the closures will last longer than a single afternoon. City officials have also canceled a popular Friday concert and recreational activities, with normal operations not expected to resume until next week.

The City of Fort Walton Beach announced that all municipal offices and facilities will close at noon on Thursday, October 8, 2026, giving employees time to secure buildings before the storm reaches the area.

The shutdown will continue through Friday, October 9, and the entire weekend. Officials anticipate reopening facilities and returning to regular business hours on Monday, October 12.

Several locations used regularly by residents are affected, including the Fort Walton Beach Recreation Center, Preston Hood Athletic Complex, Fort Walton Beach Public Library, Heritage Park and Cultural Center, Beal Memorial Cemetery and the city’s Field Office Complex.

City Hall will also close, affecting Customer Service, Human Resources, Growth Management, and the offices of the City Manager and City Clerk.

The Fort Walton Beach Golf Club is operating under a slightly different schedule. Unlike other city facilities closing at noon, the golf club will remain closed for the entire day Thursday.

The storm preparations are also affecting community entertainment. The Concerts at The Landing performance scheduled for Friday, October 9, has been canceled. All sporting events and other activities planned at city parks and recreational facilities have also been called off.

However, not every municipal service will stop.

Residential garbage collection will continue on its usual Thursday and Friday schedules. Commercial trash pickup is still planned for Saturday, provided weather conditions allow crews to work safely. If the weather prevents Saturday collection, service will move to Monday.

Residents with sanitation questions can contact the city’s Sanitation Division at 850-833-9655.

Meanwhile, the Fort Walton Beach Police Department and Fort Walton Beach Fire Department will continue responding to calls as usual while road conditions permit.

Officials cautioned that emergency responses will continue only until winds become strong enough to make road travel unsafe.

For now, Monday, October 12, remains the city’s anticipated reopening date, although the immediate priority is preparing municipal properties for Tropical Storm Isaias while maintaining essential services wherever conditions allow.
