Destin and Okaloosa County enter formal talks over future of Holiday Isle property
Destin, Florida – A piece of state-owned land beside Destin’s Norriego Point Park is moving into a formal conflict-resolution process, bringing city and county officials together for a public discussion over what should happen next.
The first step comes Wednesday, August 19, when the City of Destin and Okaloosa County will meet under Chapter 164 of the Florida Statutes to address disagreements involving the proposed lease, management and use of the Holiday Isle property.
The Conflict Assessment Meeting is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Destin-Fort Walton Beach Convention Center, 1250 Miracle Strip Parkway SE in Fort Walton Beach. It will mark the first public meeting held as part of the governmental conflict resolution process.
Representatives from both the City of Destin and Okaloosa County are expected to participate. Their discussion will center on the state-owned land adjacent to the city’s Norriego Point Park, including questions surrounding how the property could be leased, managed and used.
The purpose of the meeting is not simply to restate positions. Under the conflict-resolution process, the two governments will have an opportunity to examine the issues in dispute and explore whether a potential resolution can be reached.
The meeting may also draw multiple elected or appointed officials from Destin, Okaloosa County or both governments. Because two or more public officials could attend, the meeting has been formally noticed and will be open to the public.
Residents who want to follow the discussion will have more than one option. Those who cannot attend in person on August 19 will be able to watch the meeting through Okaloosa County’s YouTube channel at CountyOkaloosaTV.
The meeting represents an early procedural step rather than a final decision on the Holiday Isle property. Its significance lies in bringing both governments into the same formal process to discuss their differences and determine whether common ground can be found over the future management and use of the state-acquired land.
