Florida marks major milestone in effort to attract officers with 10,000 recruitment bonus payments
Tallahassee, Florida – Florida officials are marking a significant moment in the state’s effort to strengthen its law enforcement workforce, announcing that more than 10,000 recruitment bonuses have now been distributed to officers through the Florida Law Enforcement Recruitment Bonus Program.
Governor Ron DeSantis shared the milestone during a visit to Naples, highlighting the state’s ongoing push to attract and support law enforcement personnel. The program, which began in 2022, provides a one-time bonus of $5,000 after taxes to newly recruited officers who choose to serve in Florida.
According to state officials, the initiative has now delivered more than 10,000 such payments, signaling what leaders describe as a strong commitment to supporting those who protect communities across the state.
The most recent round of funding added another wave of support. More than $5 million in bonuses was distributed to 744 officers statewide, bringing the program’s total payout to more than $67.9 million since its launch.
Governor DeSantis said the program has helped draw officers from across the country, including many who previously served in states where law enforcement agencies have faced funding cuts or declining morale.
“Today in Naples, I was proud to announce a milestone for Florida’s Law Enforcement Recruitment Bonus Program: More than 10,000 bonus payments of $5,000 after-tax have now been distributed to law enforcement personnel across our state,” said Governor Ron DeSantis.
“Many of these new recruits have relocated to Florida from states where law enforcement has been defunded or demoralized by radical political agendas. We’re fortunate to have them here, and Floridians are grateful for their service every day.”

State leaders say the bonuses are designed not only as recognition but also as a practical incentive for officers considering relocation. By providing the financial boost after taxes, the state aims to help new recruits and their families transition more easily as they settle into their new communities.
Secretary of Commerce J. Alex Kelly also pointed to the broader impact of the program. He described the milestone as an important step in reinforcing Florida’s public safety infrastructure, adding that the bonuses help officers establish themselves while strengthening neighborhoods throughout the state.
The recruitment program operates alongside several other initiatives intended to support law enforcement professionals. In the Fiscal Year 2025–26 budget, the state allocated $49 million for salary increases affecting more than 16,200 sworn state officers.
The plan also raised the minimum base pay for these positions to $60,000 and included pay increases of 10 percent for entry-level officers and 15 percent for veteran personnel.
Beyond compensation adjustments, Florida has introduced a range of policies aimed at improving recruitment and retention. These efforts include expanded wellness resources for officers, tougher penalties for crimes committed against law enforcement personnel, and new educational opportunities designed to build interest in the profession.
Among those programs is the Florida Law Enforcement Academy Scholarship Program, which helps cover the cost of training for individuals entering the field. Law enforcement education initiatives have also been introduced in high schools, offering students early exposure to potential careers in public safety.
Officials say the combination of financial incentives, training support, and expanded benefits reflects a larger strategy to position Florida as a leading destination for law enforcement professionals.
For officers who choose to begin or continue their careers in the state, the package of incentives extends beyond the recruitment bonus. Benefits include opportunities for career advancement, comprehensive health coverage, retirement plans, student loan forgiveness programs, and assistance with home financing.
