Okaloosa County residents invited to free hurricane expo with safety tips, food trucks, and expert advice on May 3

Okaloosa County, Florida – The excitement is growing as Okaloosa County prepares for its second annual “Florida’s Greatest Hurricane Preparedness Party. From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Okaloosa County Administration Building, this innovative event is set for Saturday, May 3, 2025. The county wants to improve this year’s event with even more informative and engaging activities to boost community preparedness for the hurricane season, which begins on June 1, following the great attendance and favorable comments from last year’s first expo.

Emphasizing the significance of the event, Okaloosa County Board Chairman Paul Mixon said it is an essential opportunity for residents to revisit their evacuation plans, update their disaster supply kits, and discuss safety issues with family members.

“It is important for all of us in Okaloosa County to recognize the serious threat storms pose to our area and the devastation they can cause,” said Okaloosa County Board Chairman Paul Mixon.

“The annual Hurricane Expo is a reminder that we need to do what we can to prepare our families in advance so we do not have to panic at the last minute. I invite everyone to attend this important event to remain informed and better equipped for the upcoming storm season.”

Open to the public, the exhibition offers an interesting array of materials and events. Attendees can expect to get the 2025 Hurricane Guide and visit several vendor booths, participate in public safety conversation with first responders, and enjoy food trucks and interactive exhibits.

These displays are meant to offer insightful material on storm readiness. The first 100 attendees will get free tote bags packed with surprise gifts donated by Keep Okaloosa Beautiful as a bonus motivation.

Echoing Chairman Mixon, Okaloosa County Vice Chairman Carolyn Ketchel underlined the strength of the local community spirit. Ketchel stated that the community is a close-knit group that rallies in times of need and that planning in advance for the hurricane season reflects this attitude; she urges people to get involved and be always prepared.

The county remains steadfast in its commitment to public safety, as reflected in the remarks of Commissioner Trey Goodwin. Goodwin said that the county is dedicated to ensuring our community and its assets are well-prepared for any storm threats.

Presentations by respected authorities including Patrick Maddox, Okaloosa County’s Director of Public Safety, and Jason Beaman from the National Weather Service Mobile will help highlight the event. Maddox, who has been instrumental in coordinating responses to many hurricanes and other crises during his long career, will join Beaman, who supervises the meteorological and hydrological programs for the region, in offering insights on the the latest storm preparedness approaches.
