Destin’s Airport Road is getting a two-week makeover and drivers should expect delays starting Monday

Destin, Florida – Drivers who regularly travel along Airport Road in Destin should prepare for a different commute over the next two weeks. Road crews are getting ready to replace worn asphalt along a section of the roadway, bringing temporary lane closures and possible delays.

The work begins Monday, November 2, and will continue through several stages before the road receives its final pavement markings. For motorists and businesses along the route, the biggest challenge may be navigating construction while keeping daily travel plans on track.

The City of Destin has issued a traffic advisory announcing milling and resurfacing operations on Airport Road, covering the stretch from the curve near Destin Executive Airport to U.S. Highway 98.

According to city officials, the project will begin with the removal of existing asphalt from November 2 through November 4. This process, known as milling, prepares the roadway for a new layer of pavement.

Crews will then spend November 5 and 6 completing additional milling and cleanup work. During this phase, construction will focus on areas requiring more attention, including intersections, curves and sections surrounding manholes.

After that, the project will move into its resurfacing phase.

New asphalt is scheduled to be installed from November 9 through November 11. The following day, November 12, crews expect to finish cleanup operations and remove traffic control devices used during construction.

However, the roadway improvements will not be entirely finished when the paving equipment leaves.

Temporary pavement markings are expected to begin November 13, with the work taking approximately two days. Permanent striping is planned roughly 30 days later.

Throughout the project, drivers should expect occasional disruptions as crews move between different sections of Airport Road.

Temporary lane closures, slower traffic and construction equipment will be present in the work zone. The city is asking motorists to reduce their speeds, pay attention to posted signs and follow instructions from traffic flaggers.

Businesses and property owners along Airport Road could also experience temporary access restrictions while work is underway.

Although the city has outlined specific dates for each phase, the schedule is not guaranteed. Construction activities depend on suitable weather conditions, and unexpected changes could affect when certain operations are completed.

For residents and motorists, the immediate priority is allowing extra time when traveling through the affected area and remaining alert around road crews.

The City of Destin thanked the public for its patience and cooperation as the roadway improvements move forward. Once paving and permanent striping are completed, the project will leave Airport Road with a renewed asphalt surface along the designated section.
