Destin celebrates major state purchase protecting coastline from private development

Destin, Florida – Officials in Okaloosa County are very grateful to the State of Florida for buying a major piece of waterfront land in Destin and keeping it open to the public instead of letting it be developed by private companies. The Florida Cabinet and Governor Ron DeSantis both agreed to the purchase. This is a big step in protecting the area’s coastal heritage and making it easier for people to enjoy the outdoors.

Board Chairman Paul Mixon congratulated the governor and state leaders for seeing the rare chance to protect one of Florida’s most valuable stretches of coastline.

“Thank you, Governor DeSantis and the Florida Cabinet, for recognizing the tremendous value of this land and approving an investment that will expand public access of the coastline for Floridians,” said Okaloosa County Board Chairman Paul Mixon. “The state recognized what a unique opportunity this was – to purchase land on our state’s one-of-a-kind coast for a new state park – and they took action with Floridians in mind.”

The new site will add a lot of public parkland to Destin, making it 33% bigger and connecting it directly to Gulf Shore Drive. The location has a protected seawall, improved roads and parking, and utility connections that are already there. One of the most important parts of the deal is a 53-slip marina that will now be open to the public instead of being owned by a private company. This will make it easier for boaters and outdoor lovers to get to Destin’s waterways.

Okaloosa County Commissioner Drew Palmer highlighted the long-term value of the state’s investment, calling it a strategic move that will shape the future of the community.

“The purchase of this parcel, appraised by state-certified professionals, represents a strategic investment in our community’s future,” said Okaloosa County Commissioner Drew Palmer (District 5). “It protects public access to a rare stretch of waterfront that would otherwise be lost to private development, preserves one of the most iconic views along our coastline, and ensures lasting benefits for Destin, Okaloosa County, and generations to come. I’m grateful to the Florida Legislature, Governor, and Cabinet for recognizing the importance of this opportunity and making it a reality.”
