Okaloosa County schools aim to inspire civic pride through September’s patriotic educational programs

Okaloosa County, Florida – Okaloosa County schools are celebrating America’s founding fathers this September, involving students in a range of instructional activities meant to respect the country’s past and foundational principles.

Beginning with Patriot Day on September 11, schools around the district will stage patriotic pep rallies and memorial events. These activities will give students an opportunity to engage with military personnel and first responders, therefore deepening their knowledge of the relevance of the day. Specific courses targeted on the events of September 11, 2001 will also be part of homeroom sessions, thus stressing the historical significance and the bravery shown during these events.

Middle school students enrolled in civics and high school students enrolled in U.S. government courses will undergo focused instruction on September 11, designated as 9/11 Heroes’ Day, under further stressing of the educational focus. Focusing on the history and long-lasting relevance of the events that impacted contemporary American policy and society, these classes will run at least 45 minutes of instruction.

Constitution Day on September 17 will also be another important occasion when students all throughout the district explore the background and relevance of the United States Constitution. This day celebrates 237 years since notable individuals including George Washington and Benjamin Franklin signed the fundamental constitution. Events scheduled for this day aim to promote respect of the Constitution and its part in safeguarding the liberties enjoyed by Americans nowadays.

Celebrate Freedom Week, observed in the last full week of September, marks the culmination of the educational programs. Students will begin each day this week by reciting the preamble of the Constitution. This activity seeks to expand students’ knowledge of the Declaration of Independence and its central relevance in the foundation of the United States combined with materials from the National Archives and the Library of Congress.

Apart from imparting a historical knowledge, these events seek to inspire civic pride and duty among students. Through participatory and reflective learning opportunities, Okaloosa County schools are making sure the legacy of America’s founders is both revered and remembered by tying them with the past.
