Destin opens public hearing on sign regulations tied to business visibility and city appearance

Destin, Florida – In a beach city built on first impressions, even a sign can shape the view.

That will be part of the discussion Monday night, when the Destin City Council meets for its regular session and opens a public hearing on proposed changes to the rules that guide signs across the city. The meeting is scheduled for July 6, 2026, at 6:00 p.m. inside the Destin City Hall Annex Council Chambers at 4100 Indian Bayou Trail.

The item drawing attention is Ordinance No. 26-07-LC. If approved, the measure would move and rename the city’s current Land Development Code section on signs. Article 16, now titled “Signs,” would become Article 8, “Sign Regulations.” The ordinance also modifies, amends and updates the city’s sign rules, according to the public notice.

The full details matter because sign regulations touch many parts of daily life in Destin. They can affect local shops, restaurants, property owners, real estate projects, temporary advertising, wayfinding, monument signs and electronic message centers. In a tourism city known for its beaches and scenic appeal, those rules also help shape what residents and visitors see along roads, commercial areas and neighborhood corridors.

City documents state that the ordinance includes standard legal sections covering authority, findings of fact, incorporation into the Land Development Code, conflicting provisions, severability and an effective date. More specific changes, including any updates related to sign types, size, placement, lighting or digital signs, are available for review through the City of Destin Planning Department.

The proposal also fits into a wider effort by the city to reorganize and modernize its Land Development Code. Recent actions have included similar cleanup and renumbering work involving other code articles, along with updates tied to nonconformities, parking and transportation standards.

Residents, business owners and other stakeholders will have a chance to speak during the public hearing. Written comments may also be submitted in advance. The agenda and meeting packet are available through the City of Destin’s CivicClerk public portal.

The city also noted that people with disabilities who need assistance to participate should contact the City Clerk’s office at (850) 837-4242 at least 48 hours before the meeting. Spanish-language and other assistance is also available.

For Destin, the hearing is more than a technical code update. It is another step in deciding how the city balances business visibility, growth, enforcement and the look of a community seen by thousands of visitors every year.
