Okaloosa County leaders and volunteers begin yearlong effort to honor nation’s 250th birthday

Okaloosa County, Florida – Okaloosa County is already getting ready for the nation’s 250th birthday. On February 5, 2026, local officials, civic groups, and community volunteers met in Shalimar for the first meeting of the Okaloosa County America 250 Commission. The workshop was the start of a year-long effort to plan events that will encourage people from across the county to think about the creation of the country and take part in this historic milestone.

A wide range of groups took part in the opening debate, such as history societies, state historical partners, schools, chambers of business, municipal leaders, military installations, first responders, and appointed community members. People who wanted to help the commission’s work also came, showing that a lot of people in the area were interested in the anniversary celebration.

The project was called a “remembrance and a call to unity” by Commission Chairman Graham Fountain. He stressed how important it is to recognize those who gave their lives to build the nation and those who continue to support its ideals.

“We can all come together, pause and reflect on the contributions made by our patriot ancestors who fought and died to create our great republic and those many heroes that continue to make the United States of America a true example of freedom throughout the next 250 years,” Graham said.

Organizers are making plans for a full schedule of events in 2026. Some of the first events are the launch of an award for military members in February, a gala commemorating heroes later in the month, and an international festival in March.

In Crestview, there will be a Patriots Day parade and a celebration at the courthouse in the spring. In June, there will be a patriotic drone show and an evening banquet at the Destin-Fort Walton Beach Rigdon Center. Fireworks on Independence Day in municipalities and cities will mark the middle of summer, and in the fall there will be a gathering to remember veterans and a series of Veterans Day rituals and a parade in November.

To deepen the historical atmosphere, the commission is encouraging participants to wear colonial-era clothing at events, blending education with celebration. Vice Chairman Mitzi Henley said that wearing clothes from that period is a meaningful way to connect with the lives and legacy of the country’s founders.

The commission’s official channels are open to community groups that want to promote events linked to the celebration. This will help make the celebration happen across the county throughout the anniversary year. The goal of the planning process is to make sure that Okaloosa County’s tribute to America’s 250th anniversary is both lasting and welcoming to everyone.
