Now home to more than 7,140 people, Freeport is a city whose population has skyrocketed by more than 20% since the 2020 census. This expansion emphasizes an alive neighborhood ready to welcome initiatives combining cultural enrichment with public pride. Apart from improving the visual attractiveness of the city, the Anchored in Freeport project seeks to boost the local economy and encourage community spirit.

The anchors chosen for the project honor Freeport’s beginnings as a vibrant port city that traditionally drew immigrants with its natural harbors essential for trade and transportation. These anchors will be crafted by Castaways in Freeport, making sure that every piece is a locally produced work reflecting the legacy and character of the community.

Artists living in Walton County are being encouraged to join in this creative project. Those chosen will get a stipend to help with art supply and material expenses. Their profiles and artwork will also be included on the CAA and city websites, the Facebook page of the project, and a printed map guiding residents and guests to many anchor places.

With options ranging from $500 to $3,000, the community and local companies are invited to help this artistic endeavor through different sponsorship possibilities. This money will help the project to be carried out and guarantee the sustainability of the artistic installations.

Comprising the Monarch Art Trail, the public murals project, and the Underwater Museum of Art, “Anchored in Freeport” is one of a larger set of efforts by the CAA known as Art in Public Spaces Programs (APSP). These initiatives together seek to turn Freeport into a thriving center for cultural tourism and community involvement, therefore enhancing its appeal to visitors and a beloved home to the locals.
