Back-to-school rock painting event on August 29 brings affordable family fun to Destin

Destin, Florida – A few dollars, a blank rock and a little imagination are all families will need for a late-summer morning in Destin.

The City of Destin is inviting residents and visitors to close out August with a Back to School Rock Painting Party, a family-friendly event planned for Saturday, Aug. 29, 2026, at Captain Royal Melvin Heritage Park.

The event will run from 9 to 11 a.m. at the waterfront park, located at 206 Harbor Boulevard in Destin. Organizers are keeping the setup simple: participants can paint rocks together while enjoying snacks and beverages, with the supplies provided as part of the event.

Admission is $3 for Destin residents and $5 for non-residents. Pre-registration is required, and the city is encouraging families to sign up early because space is limited.

The rock-painting party is open to all ages, making it an activity for children, parents and other family members rather than an event restricted to students heading back to the classroom. With materials already provided, participants only need to register and show up ready to create.

The timing also gives families one more community activity near the end of August, with the two-hour morning format leaving much of the day open afterward.

Captain Royal Melvin Heritage Park sits along Harbor Boulevard in Destin, providing the setting for the city-organized gathering. According to the event information, snacks, beverages and painting supplies will all be available during the program.
