Parents get a break as Destin Community Center hosts three-hour Willy Wonka-themed night on Sept. 18
Destin, Florida – For three hours Friday night, Destin parents can trade the usual dinner-and-bedtime routine for a little breathing room. Their children, meanwhile, will be stepping into a chocolate-factory adventure inspired by Willy Wonka.
The Destin Community Center will host Kids’ Night Out: “Willy Wonka” on Friday, Sept. 18, offering children ages 5 to 12 an evening of games, crafts, pizza and supervised activities while their parents head out or simply enjoy a quieter night.
The event runs from 6 to 9 p.m. at the community center, 101 Stahlman Ave. The City of Destin Parks and Recreation Department describes the program as a “Willy Wonka” chocolate adventure featuring “themed games, pizza, crafts, and lots of fun.”
Pre-registration is required. Destin residents pay $40, while children from outside the city pay $50. A sibling discount is available for resident families, although the exact discount is not listed in the city’s online information.
Families can register through the city’s recreation portal at cityofdestin.com/reconline or call the Destin Community Center at 850-654-5184.
For first-time users, the online system requires an account and household information. Destin residents also need to verify their address, typically by uploading a driver’s license. A guardian’s license can be used for minors.
Friday’s chocolate-themed evening continues a series of Kids’ Night Out programs held throughout the year. Previous editions have used themes including Toy Story, Mad Scientist, Lego Night and Christmas. The basic setup remains familiar: children spend a Friday evening taking part in organized activities while parents get several hours on their own.
The city has not published a detailed schedule for the Sept. 18 event, leaving the exact Wonka-themed games and crafts as part of the surprise. No costume contest has been announced.
Parents of children with food allergies may want to contact the center before registering because pizza is included and no separate menu has been posted.
Similar Kids’ Night Out events have previously had limited capacity, so families interested in attending are encouraged to reserve a place ahead of time rather than depend on walk-up availability.
Pickup is scheduled for 9 p.m. For questions about registration, activities or pickup procedures, families can contact the recreation office at 850-654-5184.
For Destin parents looking for a Friday-night break, the arrangement is straightforward: three hours for them, and a golden-ticket-style evening of pizza, crafts and chocolate-factory fun for the kids.
