Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office brings emergency lessons and K-9 smiles to Ark Preschool

Okaloosa County, Florida – For a few minutes earlier this week, the back seat of an Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office patrol vehicle was not a place connected with trouble. It became one of the most exciting seats at Ark Preschool and Daycare.

There was also a four-legged visitor waiting to steal the show. K-9 Beau arrived with deputies for a hands-on safety lesson designed for some of the county’s youngest residents.

Community Resource Deputies Tony Abel and Tim Patterson joined Crime Prevention Manager Ashley Bailey for the special visit. Together, they introduced the children to basic safety information in a setting that was friendly, simple and easy to understand.

The group spoke with the preschoolers about emergencies and what they should know when something goes wrong. The children also received a close-up look at equipment carried by a deputy, giving them a rare chance to see items they may have previously noticed only from a distance.

Questions quickly followed. The young students were encouraged to speak up, learn more about the deputies’ work and become comfortable interacting with local law enforcement officers.

Then came the moments that drew the biggest reactions.

The children met K-9 Beau, the sheriff’s office dog who became an immediate favorite during the visit. They also had the opportunity to climb into the back of a patrol vehicle, many of them doing so for the first time.

While the visit brought plenty of smiles, it also gave deputies an early opportunity to build trust with children and introduce important safety ideas before an emergency ever happens. Instead of meeting law enforcement during a stressful situation, the preschoolers were able to ask questions and explore in a familiar environment.

The experience ended with two small surprises for every child. Each student received a K-9 Beau sticker and a “Junior Deputy” pin to remember the day.

By the time the sheriff’s office team prepared to leave, Ark Preschool and Daycare had gained a new group of junior deputies, complete with badges, stickers and fresh stories about Beau and the patrol vehicle.

For the children, it was an unusual break from the regular preschool routine. For the deputies, it was a chance to make safety education memorable, one question, one pin and one K-9 introduction at a time.
