Fort Walton Beach opens October with tribute to Italian American heritage and nearly 50 years of local community roots

Fort Walton Beach, Florida – October begins in Fort Walton Beach with a formal nod to a community whose local roots stretch back nearly half a century.

The City Council has proclaimed October 2026 as Italian American Heritage and Culture Month, recognizing the history, volunteer work and cultural contributions of Italian Americans in Fort Walton Beach and across Florida.

The proclamation was presented during the Sept. 15 City Council meeting, when Mayor Nic Allegretto recognized members of the Joseph B. Franzalia Lodge and read the declaration. The local lodge has been part of Fort Walton Beach since 1978, giving the organization a 48-year presence in the city.

The proclamation also pointed to the size of Florida’s Italian American population. About 1.3 million Americans of Italian descent live in the state, placing Florida third in the nation by total Italian American population, according to the city.

That statewide presence is tied to a longer organizational history. The Order of the Sons & Daughters of Italy in America was founded in 1905, while the organization’s Grand Lodge of Florida was incorporated in 1953.

Italian American Heritage Month itself dates to 1989, when it was established through a proclamation involving the U.S. Congress and President George H.W. Bush. Fort Walton Beach’s 2026 recognition comes 37 years after that observance began.

City officials also highlighted the community work carried out through Italian American clubs and organizations. According to the proclamation, those groups contribute time and energy to local causes, provide scholarships and assist disadvantaged members of their communities.

The recognition extends beyond Fort Walton Beach. Special events are expected to take place across Florida during October as communities mark Italian American heritage and culture.

In the proclamation, Allegretto encouraged Fort Walton Beach residents to recognize the contributions Italian Americans have made and to celebrate their heritage throughout the month.

The proclamation was signed and sealed on Sept. 15, formally designating October 2026 as Italian American Heritage and Culture Month in Fort Walton Beach. The city’s full announcement and proclamation are available through the City of Fort Walton Beach website.
