Okaloosa County students can win prizes in local and statewide Black History Month contests

Okaloosa County, Florida – In celebration of Black History Month, students across Florida are invited to showcase their creativity and appreciation for African American contributions through various contests hosted by the Okaloosa County School District (OCSD). From door decorations to artwork creation to an essay competition, the festivities will promote the topic “Honoring African American Contributions to Florida’s Success.”
Door Decorating Contest
Kicking off the festivities, OCSD has announced its annual Door Decorating Contest, where students and educators are encouraged to adorn classroom doors in vibrant displays that reflect this year’s theme. Participants eligible to compete are elementary through high school students as well as community schools and school/district officials. The doors are supposed to be striking visual stories honoring the important part African Americans have had in forming Florida’s history and culture.
By February 25, 2025 participants must email [email protected] a picture of their decorated door. Awards of prizes will be given at several educational levels, so guaranteeing a wide involvement and recognition.
Art Contest
Similarly, OCSD is calling for entries for its Art Contest, which challenges students from kindergarten through high school to create artworks that embody the contributions of African Americans to the state. Based on school grade levels, the contest falls into five categories; each category honors one winner.
Students who want to enter must email a completed entry form to [email protected] together with a picture or digital copy of their work by the same February deadline. Through exploring the rich tapestry of African American history in Florida, this contest gives students a forum to showcase their creativity.
Florida Department of Education Essay Contest
Beyond the efforts of the district, students are encouraged to take part in the statewide Essay Contest, sponsored by First Lady Casey DeSantis and Governor Ron DeSantis. Under the direction of the Florida Department of Education, this contest looks for essays that carefully consider and investigate the theme. Participants should visit the website of the Florida Department of Education for additional information.
These contests not only foster a deeper understanding of African American heritage but also encourage a sense of community and shared pride in Florida’s diverse history. Through artistic expression and academic inquiry, students may honor the past and inspire next generations. The annual celebrations of educational enrichment by the Okaloosa County School District show a continuous dedication to inclusion and cultural awareness.
