Okaloosa County celebrates second grader Vanessa Wesbur’s exceptional academic milestone

Okaloosa County, Florida – The young Vanessa Wesbur, a second grader from Wright Elementary, stepped onto the stage at the Envision Credit Union Regional Spelling Bee in Tallahassee earlier this month for a good reason. This event, held on March 8, 2025, marked a significant milestone for Vanessa, who not only represented her school but also became the youngest competitor in the bee’s history.
Vanessa’s regional appearance was set up earlier in the year when she won the championship in the spelling bee at her school. Vanessa’s victory carried on the legendary Scripps National Spelling Bee participation history at Wright Elementary, in Okaloosa County. Her journey from a school champion to a regional contender was watched and cheered on by her supportive parents and dedicated teachers, Angie Willis and Mandy Bennett.
Vanessa showed extraordinary composure and aptitude as the competition progressed, moving through the rounds with a mix of excitement and focused precision. Given the older and more experienced students she faced, her stunning performance in the fifth round guaranteed her a tie for sixth place—a great achievement.
Her family and teachers were there, giving a consistent source of inspiration, creating an exciting environment. The audience and fellow contestants praised Vanessa’s composure under duress and her ability to tackle difficult terms much beyond her grade level.
“Our Wright Elementary family is so proud of Vanessa’s great success in this competition,” said Principal Suzanne Boyd. “Her accomplishment is just one example of the dedicated student she is every day. Vanessa’s drive, poise, and commitment to being the best she can be shows in everything she does. We look forward to seeing her continue to thrive at Wright and beyond.”
