DeSantis directs investigation into possible financial mismanagement by former University of Florida President Ben Sasse
Florida – Florida Governor Ron DeSantis recently asked for an in-depth investigation at the expenses of former University of Florida (UF) President Ben Sasse in a move that has attracted a lot of media attention. Inspired by investigative reporting from a student-run newspaper, the study aims to answer questions about possible state fund abuse under Sasse’s direction.
Governor DeSantis, known for his hands-on approach to state governance, emphasized the importance of fiscal responsibility in a statement released by Bryan Griffin, his communications director.
“We take the stewardship of state funds very seriously,” Griffin stated as reported by The Hill, referencing to a statement Griffin sent to the outlet on Thursday, verifying that talks on the financial activities in issue were under way involving university leadership as well as the Board of Governors.

The investigation follows a story by the Independent Florida Alligator, UF’s student newspaper, which showed significant expenditure under Sasse’s direction. The report revealed that spending in the president’s office had increased, mostly because of costly contracts with elite consulting firms and pay for former Senate employees and Republican politicians. Such disclosures have caused questions around the state, which calls for more responsibility and openness in handling university funds.
The investigation will revolve mostly on the Florida Board of Governors, in charge of monitoring the public university system of the state. This body guarantees that the twelve institutions inside the system follow the best standards of operation and financial management and controlling.
Former Republican U.S. Senator from Nebraska Ben Sasse said last month he would be leaving the presidency by the end of July due to a family health concern. His departure adds challenges to the change since growing criticism of his university’s financial management policies coincides with his departure.

The ongoing investigation highlights a larger effort by the DeSantis government to guarantee prudent use of public funds, especially inside Florida’s higher education system. The result of this study could have long-lasting effects on how public colleges in Florida manage their financial governance as the state and the university community wait for more developments.
