Trick Mirror: Reflections on Self Delusion

Jia Tolentino

Penguin Random House

Jia Tolentino is one of my favorite contributing writers for The New Yorker, so of course I binge read her book of personal essays as soon as it came out. This is by no means an easy read. Jia is brilliant and eloquent and broaches difficult and often rage-inducing topics. Her cultural commentary on social media, internet scammers, and the evolution of the athleisure industry are candid and refreshing. But where she really shines is in her essays reflecting her personal experiences with reality TV, teenage drug use, and “the excesses of the wedding industry.” She’s been called the voice of the millennial generation, and I can totally see why.
