A Steely Stage Crafters Spectacular

Stage Crafters invites everyone to their second production of the 2017 season, Robert Harling’s Steel Magnolias, Aug. 4-13.

The action is set in Truvy’s beauty salon in Chinquapin, Louisiana, where all the ladies who are anybody come to have their hair done. Helped by Annelle, her eager new assistant, the wisecracking Truvy dispenses hairstyles and free advice to the town’s rich curmudgeon and local social leader.

Filled with hilarious repartee and not a few acerbic but humorously revealing verbal collisions, the play moves toward tragedy when, in the second act, the spunky and diabetic Shelby risks pregnancy knowing she may lose her life.

The sudden realization of their mortality affects the others, but also draws on their underlying strength and love, which give the play, the characters and the audience the opportunity to enjoy that most precious emotion, “laughter through tears.”

Steel Magnolias is a unique classic, not so much a dramedy, but a beloved comedy with heart. This show, directed by Melissa Wolf-Bates, is sure to be one to remember.

Performances are Aug. 4-6 and 11-13 at the Fort Walton Beach Civic Auditorium. Friday and Saturday shows are at 7:30 p.m. Sunday matinees at 2 p.m. Tickets are $20 (students pay $10), available at the door, at P.S. Gifts in Fort Walton Beach and Bayou Book Co. in Niceville, by phone at 850-243-1101, and online at www.StageCraftersFWB.com.
