Murder mystery Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead was published in Polish a decade ago, but was recently translated to English. The main character Janina Duszejko is an eccentric, elderly woman living alone deep in the woods in Poland. In her spare time, she studies astrology, translates the poetry of William Blake, and lectures the townspeople on animal rights. Her small village is rattled when prominent citizens are found dead in the woods around her home. She and her neighbors perform amateur investigations of the crimes causing Janina to become convinced that the forest animal are the culprits—that they are taking revenge on humankind for their mistreatment. But everyone writes her off as a batty old woman. This story is well told and beautifully translated, and the ending is satisfyingly unexpected.
