The Art of SoWal’s Donna Vann…

The wildly popular Art in Public Places continues with artist Donna Vann displaying her work at the Coastal Branch Library in Santa Rosa Beach throughout December. Library hours are 9 AM-6 PM Mondays and 9 AM-5 PM Tuesday through Saturday.

Ms. Vann took her first art lesson in 1997, after watching a demonstration by artist Karen Kardel. She was encouraged to try it and studied oils for five years with local artist Dorothy Starbuck.

Next, the artist decided to take a stab at pastel painting and had four years of guidance with June Holm. Ms. Vann has attended many workshops of well-known artists, including Morgan Samuel Price, Pat Ford, Melody Bogle and Tom Hughes.

She paints mainly in pastels, but also does oil, oil and cold wax, acrylic, and occasional watercolor. While her subjects are varied, Ms. Vann primarily paints landscapes or nature. “There’s nothing more beautiful than God’s marvelous creation, the earth and all that’s in it,” she says.

In recent years, Ms. Vann has explored abstract and mixed media, and she says she’s open to all avenues of the art world.

Donna Vann is a member of the Cultural Arts Alliance of Walton County, and her work has been exhibited at the Visual Arts Center, DeFuniak Springs’ annual Chautauqua Assembly, and the members’ tents at ArtsQuest and the Flutterby Festival.

Her paintings have been featured on the cover of Beachcomber and in the CAA’s Calendar of Art. You can also find Ms. Vann’s work in private collections in Arkansas, Colorado, Iowa, Georgia, Tennessee, Missouri and Florida…but call before you show up.
