Our Podcast Picks for 2019

Sometimes it’s hard to judge a good podcast by listening to the first few episodes. The podcaster might be new to the format or nervous or they haven’t adjusted to their partner yet. So we usually try to withhold judgement until we’ve listened to a new podcast for a while.

For our 2019 picks, Beachcomber is giving you a mixture of new and tried and true.

If you remember the Paul Harvey radio show—yes, we are dating ourselves—you’ll love The Way I Heard It from Mike Rowe. He calls it short mysteries for the curious mind with a short attention span. His wit and charm flow through each story while dripping little hints of whom the story is about until the reveal at the end. Well written and totally worth the time…if you have a short attention span!

Next up is the Armchair Expert. Dax Shepard is best known for the 2017 film ChiPs and as Crosby Braverman on the NBC dramedy Parenthood from 2010-15. Currently, he co-stars in ABC’s Bless This Mess and the Netflix series The Ranch. He’s also married to Kristen Bell, whom we all love.

Busy as he may be, Shepard takes time to put up a very entertaining podcast with some boyish humor and a handful of somewhat serious topics. It’s an eclectic mix, but he’s had Edward Norton, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and Chelsea Handler on, to name a few. Plus a variety of therapists on whom he practices mental gymnastics.

Going to the darker side, people are getting hooked on Crime Junkie. It has quite a following here on the Emerald Coast—just ask around. This true crime podcast is hosted by Ashley Flowers and co-hosted by Brit Prawat. Both are from Indianapolis, Indiana, and they’ve produced over 100 episodes since launching in December of 2017.

It’s sort of like talking crime with your best friends, and they stay on point and build the suspense. If true crime is your game, become a Crime Junkie. You’ll thank us later.

New to the podcast game is our local photographer Sarah Noonan. If you haven’t seen her photography down on the docks and around Destin, you are a missing a sight to behold. Start following her on Instagram immediately at TheGoodLifeDestin.

Sarah is incredibly talented and now she’s extending her Good Life Destin brand to a podcast. She’s only done a few episodes so far, interviewing local businesses, but we like supporting the newcomers—especially when they’re local and as talented as Sarah.
