Music – A Subversive History
Ted Gioia has written several excellent books on music, including historical and critical works on jazz. His latest, Music – A Subversive History, takes a broad, thoughtful and occasionally provocative look at the “evolution” of music, and of music-lovers. He articulates both a grand unifying theory and several sub-theories, shedding light on things you might be wondering about, including where modern music could be headed.
As for the “subversive” part, surprise—it’s actually music itself that is subversive, in ways you wouldn’t always guess. If you can’t see a connection between Neolithic Era culture and country music, ask Ted.
