Live Music Review – Love Gun

Maritime Park, Pensacola, October 21, 2018

At Pensacola’s Maritime Park, in the shadow of Wahoo Stadium on a crisp night, New Orleans-based KISS tribute band Love Gun took the stage.

It was an all-ages event, which always makes for fun people watching…an elderly couple two-stepping, diehard KISS fans, and kids literally hopping around enjoying the sights and sounds. The evening was framed by a phenomenal sunset.

Love Gun paid homage to KISS with over-the-top costumes, iconic makeup, and the full spectacle of smoke, fire, and a “Gene Simmons” who spit blood during a bass solo. The band does more than just play the songs that KISS made popular—they reenact the band in all their glory, taking all those fun beats that made KISS famous and giving us an opportunity to relive them or experience them for the first time.

Maritime Park has a phenomenal large stage and is home to a free concert series that lasts through most of the summer months. This show was actually a makeup day from a previously rained-out concert that made for a cooler night, with many attendees sporting hoodies and blankets.

In spite of some controversy (rock isn’t dead Gene, seriously), it’s hard to argue with the live show that KISS produces. Love Gun takes that bar seriously and works to include as many of the details that make KISS, well, KISS.

Their set list also covers just about every KISS song of which the average person is aware. They kicked off the set with the song they take their band name from—yes, “Love Gun” is an actual KISS song. From “Strutter” to “Detroit Rock City” and, of course, “Rock and Roll All Night,” pretty much every major moment of KISS’ career was covered and celebrated.
