If you’ve ever imbibed along the northern part of Eglin Parkway, chances are you’ve had the pleasure of being served by Tammy. Her self-described (but we agree) “charming personality” first turned up in the ‘90s at the old Don Carlos, housed in the very building that is now home to one of the area’s new AJ’s locations.
She also poured here when the place was called Mango’s, after a bartending stint up the street at Black Angus (now the Bull). She says her regulars follow her around. The owner of AJ’s on the Bayou was reluctant about hiring someone who worked in “the old place,” but he quickly came around. “He says I’m an asset,” Tammy beams.
Tammy and her husband Matt live in Shalimar. They have three children ranging in ages from 12 to 18. Tammy enjoys boating and riding motorcycles. Her favorite local spots include the Whiskey Barn and Papa Joe’s Hideaway (“Best wings in town, along with Buffalo’s Reef,” she says).
“I love the location and the people,” she tells me as the patrons at AJ’s outside bar witness another glorious sunset. Tammy’s favorite adult beverage is something called Rumplemintz, “100 proof peppermint Schnapps. Isn’t that crazy? I’ve been drinking that since forever. All my friends ask me if I’ve grown up yet, because they can’t drink it any more.”
