Musician Profiles

Beachcomber Profiles* — Alexa Burroughs

HOMETOWN: Birmingham, Alabama.

AGE: 23.

PROFESSION: Musician.

HOBBIES: Reading, working out, traveling.

RECENT ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Recently gaining residency Tuesdays with my trio Lex and the Luthors at AJ’s in Destin.

PROFILE: When I was five years old, I begged my parents for a drum set for Christmas. Fortunately for me, they were crazy enough to get me one. Fast-forward a few years—I took my first drum lesson, and I was hooked. I practiced nonstop and, when I was 12, began playing weekly for my church. That was when I fell in love with music. I picked up a guitar when I was 18. I didn’t know it at the time, but I wouldn’t ever put it down.

I never intended to turn music into a career, but I did always plan to have it as a hobby. When I was 19 and in my first year of college at Auburn, a musician friend led me to my first solo gig. It went so much better than I would have ever expected, and I had a choice to make. I called my mom on my way home from class one night and told her I was either ready to find a serving job or that I could pursue music full time. She asked me if I could pay my bills playing music, and I told her I was pretty sure I could. She told me to go for it, and if it didn’t work, she’d be there.

I began playing music full time and paid my way through Auburn being a musician…which is something I never thought I would say. In the summer before my senior year, I had the opportunity to move to Pensacola and play there for the summer. I fell in love, and decided to make this my forever home once I graduated in May 2016.

I now live in Pensacola full time and play seven to eight gigs per week throughout the Gulf Coast as a solo or with my trio. In my off seasons, I like to take off and tour wherever I can. Recently, I completed a southwest tour all the way to the Grand Canyon and back. I’m so lucky to get to live out my dreams every day.
