On Saturday, April 8, the fifth Okaloosa RevFest takes place in Downtown Fort Walton Beach. And every year, the music festival’s driving force has something new up his sleeve.
“I think it’s going to be pretty amazing, a nonstop dance party,” says Michael Flatau. “We have a lot of blues and folk stuff in there, but as soon as the sun goes down, it’s going to be funky.”
This year, New Orleans’ Big Sam’s Funky Nation takes the headlining spot. “They are playing a lot of big festivals, and we are really excited to have them,” says Flatau. “They are the biggest band we’ve had at RevFest.”
As always, the event won’t have a dull moment over the course of the 14 hour day. Eleven bands and an opening jam will alternate between two stages to keep the party going. Even when a speaker caught on fire in year three, the tight crew managed to not have more than a few minutes of downtime. The second year, even rain couldn’t dampen the event’s spirits.
Once again, the RevFest venue is KC’s Sandbar & Grill, and it will be packed to the brim with vendors, artists and lots of fun people looking forward to having a good time.
Flatau admits that he didn’t know how the festival would initially be received. “I had no idea it was going to last more than a year,” he says. But he hopes the legacy continues as a community event that people look forward to year after year.
Part of that commitment to the community is the family friendly aspect of the event. Kids under 12 get in free and can often be spotted playing in the sand or dancing to the bands during the day.
Special Forces Association Chapter 7 is also a longtime active member of the event, and recipient of a portion of the proceeds. And they usually have some irresistible raffle items at their booth.
“We had enough wits to start small and work our way bigger,” says Flatau. “We are really excited to see our little baby keep growing and growing.”
From local Beachcomber Music Award winning favorites to touring acts, from jam bands to hip hop, RevFest aims to have something for everyone. And it’s always a heck of a party.
