News from the Destin Snowbirds
Welcome to the Gulf Coast! Retirees (snowbirds) have been calling this region their second home for many decades. In the mid 1970s, the concept of forming a club for winter visitors became what is today…Destin Snowbirds, Inc. takes the floor, and at least 50 prizes are given drawn for at each gathering. (Prizes are very generously donated by local merchants anxious to attract Snowbirds to their restaurants, golf courses, shops, hair salons, etc.) The club activities range from golf, tennis and fishing, to bowling, cards and quilting.
The club is run by a seven-person board of directors. The driving force, however, is the membership, 2000-plus snowbirds coming together to keep active and enjoy their time in the Destin area.
Our meetings and registrations have been held at the “Roost”—the Destin Community Center on Stahlman Avenue—since 1994. The club meets Tuesdays through mid-March at 8:30 and 11:30 a.m. Membership is $8 per person, and it is the best value you will ever get for your money.
At the meetings, a local group performs for a half hour. Performers range from high school choirs to entertainers from local nightspots. Our president runs the business portion. Guest speakers and upcoming events/activities are mentioned in this segment. Then the door prize committee
Now that I have your interest, here is how you can join. The majority of our members arrive between Christmas and New Year’s. We will have this year’s big registration Tuesday Jan. 3 from 10 a.m. to noon. At the door will be a team of volunteer greeters, who will guide you through the registration process. After you purchase your membership, you will receive a membership name badge and a sheet listing all activities and contact information.
Tickets for upcoming events (casino bus trips, dances, golf tournaments, fashion show, a concert and a harbor party boat cruise) will be on sale at tables located around the perimeter of the gymnasium. In separate rooms, you can visit with golf course representatives to shop for special Snowbird rates and sample food from local restaurants.
If your arrival is later in the month, don’t worry. Registration is held once a week until Feb. 3. For more about the club you can check out our Web site www.destinsnowbirds.org or pick up a brochure at the Emerald Coast Tourist Information Center on Okaloosa Island, the Destin Community Center, or the Destin Chamber of Commerce. On behalf of Bill Pasel and the rest of the board, consider this your personal invitation to join the fun with the Destin Snowbirds!
