We Like I Like I Like

Pop-punk is alive and well in Beachcomberland. I Like I Like has been taking over stages in Destin, Fort Walton Beach, even DeFuniak Springs.

Vocalist-guitarist Brandon Turner started the band with bass player Kenneth Ittig after their previous project, the metal outfit Stained Ashes, met its end. Drummer Jillybones rounds out the trio.

“We decided that we wrote better as poppunk,” says Turner. “So after Stained Ashes broke up we decided that was the way to go.”

Turner has always had an affinity for the genre, “I always listened to it, but I didn’t realize it at the time. I didn’t know what the term for it was, but I’ve always been a big fan of bands like My Chemical Romance, Green Day and Blink-182.“

The band’s name came about because Turner wanted “to give everyone a chance to be a part of the new project.” He reached out to his Facebook friends for suggestions. “We got some really good ones, but I responded to those name suggestions with ‘I like, I like.’ It was just me stating that I liked the name suggestions. Then everyone was like, ‘I change my vote to I Like I Like.’”

The name has stuck, and the band’s recent signing with Skyfall Management, plus an upcoming summer tour and EP, indicate the name is likely to be on everyone’s radar.

“The local scene only thrives off the people who go to the shows,” says Turner, who has successfully been putting on DIY shows in DeFuniak Springs for the last three years. This will include a show to kick off the band’s upcoming tour July 11.

“I Like I Like stands for a couple things, one of which is to do what you want,” says Turner. “We don’t get on stage because we have to or because we are obligated to somebody. We get on stage because it’s the only thing that we want to do.

“We want people to take away a great experience, and we do our best to put on the most intense show that a pop-punk band possibly can. We put our heart into everything we do, and we hope people see that and respect that.”
