The Destin Snowbirds have hit the “Roost” (Destin Community Center) in great numbers this year. Our membership as of the Jan. 9 registration is 1,499.
Of that total, 7 percent are American, and 22 percent Canadian. The first time members total 288.
According to president Bill Pasel, nobody has a better time than snowbirds. Welcome to all, and be prepared to have a good time. Registrations will continue Monday afternoons from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Roost until Feb. 6.
Our itinerary is packed with activities. Each Tuesday morning we gather at the Roost for a session of entertainment and information about the club‘s upcoming events. The membership is so large we do the whole thing twice--once at 8:30 and again at 11.
The weekly activities include bowling, blood pressure clinics, bridge, casino trips, Chorus, Friendship Club luncheons, “funology,” pinochle, poker, quilting and tennis. In addition, we have planned many special events. The Harbor Boat Cruise aboard the Southern Star, sold out in its first day of sales. Trips to New Orleans for a Western Caribbean Cruise and a Mardi Gras weekend are also full.
Do not despair, we have more is store! Saturday, Jan. 28, we will rock the Seascape Conference Center to the music of Beachcomber Music Award nominee Chuck Lawson at the Pirates of the Caribbean Party. Tickets are $15 and include a buffet from 98 Bar-B-Que.
The annual fashion show and luncheon, “A Picnic by the Sea,” will be held at Capt. Dave’s on the Gulf Thursday, Feb.16.
Fashions are by the Dress Barn, and tickets are $25.
Have you been tempted by the beautiful shoreline and Gulf waters to cast a line and fish? Our fishing coordinator Jack Boex has plenty of details about the best places to fish here in the World’s Luckiest Fishing Village. Take time to meet Jack at the front of the auditorium every Tuesday.
If golf is your activity, Rick Paquin has lined up special deals just for members at many of the local courses. Listings are available on our Web site, www. destinsnowbirds.org, or talk to Rick on Tuesday mornings. Tickets are on sale for the Ladies Scramble Feb. 15 at Bluewater Bay, and our annual Kline/Walsh charity tournament Feb. 22 at Emerald Bay. See the ticket sales volunteers at the front of the auditorium Tuesdays.
The 22nd Annual Soundsations Benefit Concert will be held at 2 p.m., Feb. 12, at the Mattie Kelly Arts Center in Niceville. Tickets are $10, and all the money from ticket sales support the college’s performing arts program. We invite everyone to join us for this event. Tickets are available at our meetings, or at the door prior to show time.
The Destin Snowbird Club encourages all its members to enjoy the wonderful opportunities this community has to offer, from restaurants and entertainment to cultural events and the many services offered by the local business community. We hope to give back to this community, as it has been so generous in its support of the club.
