Reviews: The Sounds of Young America and Still-Vital Dave Chappelle

Hitsville: The Making of Motown

Directed by Benjamin Turner and Gabe Turner

Showtime

Anyone with a pulse will enjoy this well-choreographed dance down Memory Lane. Of particular interest—Motown founder Berry Gordy and MVP Smokey Robinson visiting the old Detroit stomping grounds and arguing about who recorded “I Heard It Through the Grapevine” first, Gladys Knight and the Pips or Marvin Gaye.

Dave Chappelle: Sticks & Stones

Netflix

A great comedian can take any topic—HBO’s recent, excruciating four-hour documentary on Michael Jackson, school shootings, etc.—and find the funny. In his latest special, Mr. Chappelle elevates the form and delivers equal parts funny and groan-making. With Eddie Murphy’s comeback around the corner, we just might be living through another Golden Age of Comedy. Lucky us.
