Captain Marvel

Directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck

In Theaters

This is the origin story of the beloved Captain Marvel, originally a pilot named Carol Danvers. The viewers get to know the ins and outs of the superhero while figuring out how she is going to resolve the ongoing battle between two alien races that now involves Earth. There is an alliance between the Kree alien, Captain Marvel and the Earthling, the famous Nick Fury, explored throughout the movie—plus the ever-delightful Goose, who is a lot more than you would have expected. Captain Marvel is packed with action, adventure, and comedy—the perfect blend for moviegoers. There’s never a dull moment.

EDITOR’S CHOICE

Leaving Neverland (HBO). After watching Dan Reed’s four-hour documentary, I am completely convinced there’s no way the film’s two subjects are lying about what the so-called King of Pop did to them. Disturbing on more levels than you can imagine. Might as well check out Oprah Winfrey’s After Neverland interview show, too, because what’s another 60 minutes, right?

Paddleton (Netflix). Ray Romano has sharpened up his acting chops of late (Get Shorty, The Big Sick), and anyone who watched the last season of Amazon’s Goliath knows what a phenomenal screen presence Mark Duplass is. A low-key buddy dramedy and road trip movie that takes on some heavy subject matter and handles it beautifully for the most part.
