Sierra Burgess Is a Loser
Directed by Ian Samuels
This Netflix original is really just your basic teen rom com. An unknown girl, Sierra Burgess (Shannon Purser), finds love in a jock (Noah Centineo) who thinks she is a really popular girl, Veronica (Kristine Froseth). Veronica is also Sierra’s bully, but they bond and become friends and help each other catfish Jamey. And while Jamey likes Veronica, it’s all about Sierra making Jamey fall for who she is.
In the grand scheme of things, this movie is really boring. It starts slow and is so predictable that it really isn’t worth the watch. In quite a few scenes, I found myself physically cringing from what happened next. The movie is extremely cliché, almost too cliché.
Both Centineo and Purser have been in Netflix originals before—Centineo in To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before and Purser playing a small part in Stranger Things—but that can’t make up for the stereotypical characters and subpar acting.
Honestly, Netflix should have released this movie before To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, because this one just sits in its shadow.
