Crazy Rich Asians

Directed by Jon M. Chu

In Theaters

Crazy Rich Asians follows Rachel Chu (Constance Wu) as she goes to Singapore to her boyfriend Nick’s (Henry Golding) best friend’s wedding. There she finds out more about him and where he comes from, as well as his crazy rich family. Rachel finds herself not measuring up to Eleanor Young’s (Michelle Yeoh) expectations and realizes that she has a big decision to make.

The acting here is spectacular, with every actor playing his or her part so well you’d think you were watching real lives unfold on screen. The scenery is breathtaking, and every glimpse of Singapore—from the street vendor to the Young family’s mansion—is incredible. The filmmakers clearly took the extra time to consider every detail.

There are a lot of characters, though, and it’s almost difficult to keep track.

Insatiable – Season 1

Netflix

The new Netflix series Insatiable follows Patty (Debby Ryan), a girl who used to be fat and got skinny over a summer because her jaw was wired shut. She meets Bob Armstrong (Dallas Roberts), a coach who quickly introduces Patty to the cutthroat world of pageants. Together, they uncover secrets about each other and everyone around them.

While Insatiable isn’t terrible, it’s not the best series Netflix has to offer. There is an underlying message to “Be yourself! Who cares what others think?” Everyone seems to experience this, including Patty, Bob, her friend Nonnie (Kimmy Shields), even Patty’s mom. But this is overlapped by how much the series tries to do. Insatiable tries to squeeze so much into one season, even one episode, that it’s overwhelming and eye-rolling.
