Rodney Crowell revisits a dozen of his best songs on ACOUSTIC CLASSICS, which unfortunately isn’t subtitled VOLUME 1, because I’m starving for more. “Shame on the Moon” (which Bob Seger took to #2 on the pop charts back in the day) gets the biggest lyrical overhaul, while the hits from 1989’s Diamonds and Dirt—“She’s Crazy for Leaving,” “After All This Time,” and “I Couldn’t Leave You If I Tried”—sound like the definitive versions. And I love Diamonds and Dirt…
Another superb father-son collaboration from Jonathan and Jesse Kellerman, CRIME SCENE introduces a new character—Clay Edison, a former basketball star turned coroner’s investigator. This one’s now available in the still-viable mass-market paperback format, so you have some time to catch up before the second installment drops July 31.
The great Jerry Lewis turns up on Season 10 of Jerry Seinfeld’s COMEDIANS IN CARS GETTING COFFEE (Netflix), and my only complaint is it’s way too short. The two Jerrys’ interactions are mostly funny and mutually respectful. Special thanks to Mr. Seinfeld for including the Zane Busby waitress sketch from the comic legend’s underrated ‘80s film Smorgasbord (a/k/a Cracking Up).
When Stephen King recommends a Netflix movie, it’s wise to drop whatever you’re doing and at least have a looksee at the first 10 minutes. Matt Palmer’s CALIBRE, about a pair of best friends’ hunting trip gone horribly (or is that horrifically?) wrong, is a must. Wonder what Mr. King thinks of the new David Spade flick?
