Walton County Coastal Library in Santa Rosa Beach presents summer reading events for children and families, sponsored by Friends of Coastal Library and South Walton Walmart.
Libraries Rock begins Monday, June 4, at 10 AM in the library’s community room. During June and July, kids can pick up summer reading logs available at the front desk. Completed logs earn free books and chances to win “Rockin’ Candy Guitars” or a brand new summer bicycle. Kids also get their pictures on the library’s “Reading Rock Star Wall of Fame.”
On June 4, the library hosts animaledzoocation, featuring live animals and audience interaction. The June 11 program features Emerald Coast Science Center, with hands-on experiments, a chemistry show, and more.
The rest of the month’s programs include Balloon Magical Music with Dr. Magical Balloons (June 18) and “Robots Rock @ Your Library,” hosted by the Emerald Coast Science Center (June 25).
Also, the library’s Teen Book Club for ages 13-18 meets every other Saturday at 2 PM starting June 2. Teens are invited to volunteer at the library for college scholarship opportunities.

The Destin Library partners with the Choctawhatchee Basin Alliance this summer to provide a hands-on science experience for children ages 5 to 12. From Shelves to Shores is a program that provides the opportunity for youth to play an active role in the restoration of the Choctawhatchee Bay.
During June and July, a total of six sessions—including hands-on activities—are scheduled. Topics include Salt Marsh Exploration, Oysters, Watershed, Water Conservation, Touch Tanks with Live Animals, and a planting field experience. In addition, children registered for the program will have the responsibility of maintaining a small marsh nursery at the library.
At the conclusion of the program, children will participate in a field trip to a Choctawhatchee Bay restoration site to plant grasses they have grown during the summer.
The programs will be held at the library at 9:30 AM starting June 8. Parents of children interested in participating in this program are required to register them in advance at cityofdestin.com/library.
On June 1 at 3 PM, the library kicks off its summer reading program with weekly themed events, concerts, contests, showcases and more.
