The first season of MR. MERCEDES (DirecTV) is the most perfectly cast adaptation of Stephen King’s work—hell, anyone’s, now that I think about it. Brendan Gleeson—recently seen on the big screen in PADDINGTON 2—is superb as retired (and tortured) detective Bill Hodges, and it doesn’t hurt to have seasoned pros like David E. Kelley, Jack Bender and Dennis LeHane behind the camera, either. Great news—a second season is in the works.

If you picked up Meg Gardiner’s latest, INTO THE BLACK NOWHERE, on my recent Editor’s Choice recommendation (and you really should have), you’ll want to catch up with the first book in the series. UNSUB is now out in mass market paperback, and its story of a California serial killer (think the Zodiac Killer, but lots worse) will keep you up nights.

BLACK PANTHER may be the first superhero picture with an agenda since SUPERMAN IV: THE QUEST FOR PEACE, but if you’re looking for a good time at the movies, Ryan Coogler’s film works just as well on that level, too. Here’s hoping our hero takes on Neo-Nazis in an upcoming installment.

Jennifer LeBeau’s TROUBLE NO MORE intercuts energetic concert footage from Dylan’s Born Again period with sermonizing by actor Michael Shannon, and the preaching has nothing—and everything—to do with the music. Currently playing on Cinemax.
