According to History.com, people in America began exchanging valentines that were handmade in the early 1700s. The “Mother of the Valentine” Esther Howland began creating and selling the first mass-produced valentines in the 1840s. The Greeting Card Association says Valentine’s Day is the second most popular card-sending event in the United States after Christmas. Besides cards, chocolate and flowers, going out to dinner is a particularly popular way to celebrate.
